Community Volunteer Projects in India

Why Go?

Overview

Imagine yourself working on a volunteer project in Rajasthan in the north west of India or in the mountainous state of Himachal Pradesh. This program is specially designed for the needs and interests of participants aged 30-65 year olds and offers you a wonderfully exciting and diverse volunteer experience.

Picture yourself in primary and secondary schools run by the government for underprivileged local children teaching English or maths, playing games with the children and making sure they get regular health check ups. Experience something completely different working with Indians with special needs by volunteering in schools for mentally challenged children, local orphanages or homes for the elderly. Or perhaps you'd like the wonderful opportunity to work with adolescent girls and women to improve thier education and offer empowerment.

Not only do our programs offer the chance to volunteer with reputable NGOs in the area, our unique programs include exciting and varied cultural excursions and learning experiences. Learn Yoga everyday with a qualified instructor, try basic and advance Hindi learning through professionally structured lessons, partake in Indian massage and attend Biweekly lectures/talks on contemporary issues from local Academia and experts.

OWH's partner has been working since year 2002 for promotion of quality volunteer opportunities in India. With their commitment to continuous improvements in the program setup, information and delivery, the 30+ volunteer program is guaranteed to offer many opportunities of meaningful voluntary work and an unforgettable cultural experience.

Program Locations

The Volunteer program is presently being offered at two separate locations in northern and north-western India. During the period from September to March, the program is offered in the north-western state of Rajasthan, which is well known for its rich history and colourful culture. As the most popular tourist destination in India, Rajasthan offers many opportunities to participants for sightseeing within the region, during, after, or before the program.

The Himalayan location is available for participates from March to November, around the regionally important town of Palampur in the state of Himachal Pradesh (actual location is the Sungal village in the Kangra district). The Himalaya Base is located 30 kms from Dharamsala, the capital of the exiled Tibetan government and centre of Tibetan Buddhist culture, adding another cultural dimension to the program and the Himalayan region.

Please note the following important details about booking flights for the arrival/departure dates and times of volunteers:

  • The program starts on every 4th Monday (with some exceptions) where volunteers are expected to use flights that arrive between 10 AM on Monday to 10 AM on Tuesday (Day 2).
  • In case that a participant has to arrive outside these times, extra airport transfer and hotel nights may need to be booked, requiring additional charges.
  • At the end of the program (4 week or 8 week), volunteers arrive back in Delhi for their flight our latest by 9 pm on a Sunday (Day 28 or Day 56).
  • It is therefore advisable that the return flight be booked for the volunteers between midnight of Sunday or sometime on Monday. Accommodation for the night between Sunday (Day 28 or 56) and Monday (Day 29 or 57) is included in the program price.
  • Airport drop facility will be provided to participants until 10 AM on the day after the last night of the program (usually a Monday). Participants requiring to reach the airport after this period will need to make own arrangement.
  • We strongly recommend that arrival flights after 10 AM on Day 2 ( Tuesday) and departure flights before midnight on Sunday ( Day 28 or Day 56) not be used as these can cause significant disturbances to the program schedule and are likely to cause additional expenses.
